Holidorks Musical Advent Calendar 2013: I’ll Beetle Adventure For Christmas.

by Ray on

There’s a pretty good chance that Beetle Adventure Racing is my favorite of the genre on the N64 and its certainly in my top ten for the system overall. I just love how out of left field it came at the time, especially with a title like that: Beetle. Adventure. Racing. How could it possibly be anything other than some bullshit rush job well on its way to the bargain bin? Yet BAR defied all expectations and can best be described as the Banjo-Kazooie of 64-bit racers. With massive stages that feature laps that go on for minutes and dozens upon dozens of short cuts and secret paths, this game is one of the crown jewels of my collection. The graphics were incredible and still hold up quite nicely and I’m really, really sad that it never made its rumored appearance for the Wii’s Virtual Console (I’d give just about anything to play it with improved resolution and a GC pad). In any case, today’s theme comes from this under the radar gem:

“Mount Mayhem” is a level that features amongst other fine details, a ski slope, Christmas decorated town, and crashed U.F.O. I guess this stage score could be considered a bit repetitive but I’m a real sucker for sleigh bells and just dig that *groove*. Sue me.
